So today was my birthday and like an adult I took it off to spend the day with my wife and baby daughter. It was sunny and around 70 degrees today in Columbus, OH, so the family and I went test driving for our new cars.

Time is limited when out with baby so only my top two choices were driven. The Cadillac ATS 2.0T and a Golf GTI PP. While the two seem different, the price point is interestingly similar.

I drove the ATS first and it’s a great car. It’s steering and chassis are amazing and that engine kicks like a mule. The interior is where the car falls apart for me. Very driver oriented in the front but the back seat became useless when the baby seat was installed. I didn’t notice until I got in the GTI but the belt line in ATS is ridiculous. It’s not unlivable by any means but not what I would prefer. If I were single or even just didn’t have the little one, it’d be great but unfortunately it’s not the car for a new family.

The GTI is almost the exact answer to the ATS’s issues. I simply could not believe how much larger inside it was compared to the Cadillac. The baby seat fit no problem and two people could actually sit on either side of it. It is noticeably slower than the ATS but more than enough power to take care of any traffic need. The biggest item was how close the chassis and driving felt to the ATS. The ATS was obviously superior but for a FWD car, it was way too close in feel.

For being so close in price, I thought that the ATS was an obvious choice due to chassis setup and available features. But, the GTI is so close to where the ATS excells and blows away where the ATS falls short that I couldn’t justify the ATS at all.

tl;dr I drove cars on my birthday and found out the GTI is more of what I want out of a car than the ATS.

As an added bonus, the GTI would probably be easier to park and maybe a little better on gas. And it’s a hatch.

Non-luxury cars are closer than ever in form and function to those with luxury badges. Same goes with performance—supercar-level performance has never been cheaper. The marginal utility is smaller than ever and the dollars and egos are bigger than ever.
